Stephanie Fryer, a special education teacher at South Man Elementary School in Logan County, has earned West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s (WVPB) November 2025 Above and Beyond Award, which honors the excellence and dedication of outstanding teachers across the Mountain State.
The Above and Beyond Award is sponsored by West Virginia Public Broadcasting, the West Virginia Treasurer’s Office, and SMART529, West Virginia’s Education Savings Plan. Each month, WVPB convenes an esteemed panel of judges to select one deserving educator from across West Virginia who consistently goes above and beyond for their students, school, and community. We are grateful for their continued support in recognizing outstanding educators across our state and especially our own, Mrs. Fryer.
The award was presented by Autumn Meadows, the Education Director from West Virginia Public Broadcasting during a surprise assembly at South Man Elementary. Mrs. Fryer’s family, along with students and staff from South Man Elementary and members of the Logan County Schools Central Office, gathered to celebrate her remarkable achievement.
As part of the recognition, Mrs. Fryer received a signature Blenko Glass apple paperweight, a monetary donation, three dozen roses, multiple handwritten thank-you cards, special cupcakes, and a gift basket filled with many of her favorite things, thoughtfully curated by her colleagues and students.
Mrs. Fryer is known for her dedication to meeting students where they are and ensuring each child receives the individualized support they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Her classroom is a place where students feel supported, challenged, and encouraged to reach their full potential.
Mrs. Fryer was nominated by her principal, Angel Harris, who describes her as an exceptional educator whose commitment to students extends far beyond the classroom and is always willing to go the extra mile for her students and for South Man Elementary. “Mrs. Fryer is a tireless advocate for children, a leader among her peers, and someone who consistently puts students first,” Harris shared. “Her impact can be felt throughout our entire school.”
Mrs. Fryer has served in education for over sixteen years with the last ten serving the South Man Elementary community. During that time, she has worn many hats, including classroom teacher, reading coach, math field day coach, BETA sponsor, and teacher leader. In every role, she leads with heart, professionalism, and a deep commitment to student success. She holds a master’s degree in reading and certifications in elementary education, reading, and special education. In addition to her instructional excellence, Mrs. Fryer mentors new teachers, contributes to schoolwide initiatives, and is a trusted source of guidance and support for her colleagues
Throughout her career, she has worked diligently to help students overcome challenges, build confidence, and experience success. Her Special Olympics team was honored with the 2025 “Heart & Hustle” Award, a testament to her dedication to inclusive opportunities for all students.
Colleagues describe Mrs. Fryer as a role model with a positive attitude who continually challenges students through meaningful learning experiences and is always willing to lend a helping hand. From supporting students with diverse needs to uplifting colleagues and leading by example, Mrs. Fryer truly embodies what it means to go above and beyond.
